Steinberg Cubase 16 Released: New Features and Updates

November 4, 2026

Cubase 16

Steinberg has released Cubase 16, the latest version of its digital audio workstation (DAW). The update improves Stem Separation, adds Spectral AudioWarp algorithms, expands MIDI editing capabilities, and introduces several workflow refinements. Cubase 16 is available in Pro, Artist, and Elements editions, with new instruments, effects, mixing features, and hardware integration options distributed across the three versions.

Improved Stem Separation, Spectral AudioWarp, and Instrument Stacks

Cubase 16 updates Stem Separation to split audio recordings into six categories: vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar, and other instruments. The expanded separation options give producers more flexibility when remixing tracks, sampling individual parts, or working with recordings that lack original multitracks.

Steinberg has also added Spectral AudioWarp algorithms developed by its HALion team. They support extreme time-stretching and pitch-shifting, allowing users to reshape recorded audio for sound design and other creative applications. The claimed improvements in processing quality come from Steinberg; independent performance testing has not been established.

Instrument Stacks provide another way to build layered sounds. Users can combine VST instruments, Sampler Tracks, and Drum Tracks into a single playable instrument, with separate controls for each layer. The feature is available in Cubase Pro and Artist.

MIDI Editing and Vocal Production Tools

The Cubase 16 Key Editor adds two MIDI editing tools. Strum introduces strumming variations to programmed chords, while Stretch Selection lets users expand or compress selected MIDI passages. The latter can also be used to create accelerando and ritardando effects.

For vocal production, Cubase 16 includes Omnivocal Basic, powered by Yamaha’s NX vocal synthesis engine. It comes with two voicebanks for generating synthetic singing parts. A new Lyrics function in the Key Editor lets users enter and edit lyrics alongside MIDI notes, with options for pronunciation and language settings.

The update also adds DrumChain, a multi-effects processor for drums, and VocalTouch, a vocal-processing plug-in with presets for different vocal styles. The FM Lab-based Module FM library contributes more than 200 presets, including leads, keys, basses, and textures.

Five new sample packs cover Afro House, Beats & Breaks, K-Pop, Latin Vibes, and Organic Sessions. Cubase 16 also integrates Waves Illugen into the Right Zone, allowing users to access the service and import generated samples directly into their projects. Steinberg includes two months of complimentary Waves Illugen access with the release.

Expanded Mixing and Hardware Integration

Cubase Pro 16 increases the number of available audio sends per channel from eight to 16. Control Room cue sends have also doubled, from four to eight, giving users more options for effects routing and headphone monitoring.

The new External Connections feature simplifies the setup of external audio and MIDI hardware, including synthesizers and outboard processors. MIDI 2.0 support has also been expanded with Note Expression and orchestral articulation messages for compatible instruments.

Other updates include Ableton Link support, improved Tempo Detection, a redesigned Audio Pool, named MIDI Continuous Controllers, and an extended ASIO-Guard pre-processing buffer.

The Settings dialog has been redesigned with searchable options for preferences, key commands, project setup, and audio connections. Cubase 16 also includes contextual Quick Help and a Guided Tour.
