Hands-On Testing: Gold 6 in a Real Mixing Session

I tested Gold 6 as a mix processor rather than evaluating it only from the feature set. The first thing that becomes obvious is that the PRE section is where the character of the plugin changes most noticeably. The 52 models are not simply interchangeable saturation presets: changing the selected preamp changes how the signal feels before it reaches the EQ and compressor stages.

In a mix, the preamp stage is useful precisely because it happens before the rest of the chain. A vocal can take a small amount of nonlinear coloration before corrective EQ, allowing the EQ to work on a differently weighted signal. A bass can be driven into a model before compression so that the compressor reacts to the added harmonics and altered envelope. On drums and instrument buses, a restrained preamp stage can add density without requiring a separate saturation plugin.

That does not make Gold 6’s preamps interchangeable with dedicated saturation processors. Processing position changes the result. Saturation inserted after EQ and compression is responding to a processed signal; a console-style preamp changes the signal that those later stages see. At moderate drive, that difference can be more useful than simply adding more distortion.
